Republican Party of Minnesota in Danger, Members Step Up to Protect Party
Whistleblowers report violations of governing documents and ignoring election rules; the MNGOP faces an uphill battle to maintain its status as a major party in Minnesota.
EDINA, MN - Members of the Republican Party of Minnesota filed a motion in the State’s Supreme Court to protect the rights and interests of approximately 2 million Republican voters.
The Republicans’ motion to intervene in the Minnesota Democrat Ken Martin’s case against the Legal Marijuana Now Party sets a significant legal precedent. The case outlines a path to remove the status of any major party, hindering ballot access to candidates.
Ringing the alarm on the urgency of the situation, attorney Susan Shogren-Smith said, “The Court’s determination of the manner of enforcement of this statute could alter the very fabric of our political systems in one of the most controversial and divisive election cycles in the history of our country. A determination about the enforcement of this matter must be expedited to protect the rights of voters, candidates and the political parties.”
For Minnesota Republicans who have observed errant decisions since State Chair David Hann was elected in 2022, there is no doubt the party has been operating on thin ice.
In Otter Tail county, more than thirty duly-elected delegates were suspended and prohibited from voting in Republican elections. Establishment-friendly MNGOP officers used county Sheriffs to intimidate Republicans and enforce the politically motivated suspensions.
In Clay county, twenty-seven duly-elected delegates were deprived of their voting rights and barred from elections. Under MNGOP Chair David Hann's direction, City police officers trespassed voters and physically removed Republicans from polling locations to prevent their votes from being cast.
According to Republican members, “The MNGOP was asked to call a State Central Committee meeting to address serious concerns. This meeting needed to be held prior to the filing of a certification of compliance with statutes and Party governing documents because the party is not in compliance."
"Chair David Hann ignored the requests and knowingly filed a false certification with the MN Secretary of State.”
A new State law in effect allows any person or entity to challenge party certification.
